Abbot Stan’s 50th Anniversary
July 21st, 2009
The day before he returned to Mepkin from his rehabilitation after falling and breaking his leg, Fr. Stan marked the 50th anniversary of his entrance to monastic life at Mepkin. On July 8th 1959, after graduating from high school in Philadelphia and spending some time with family and friends, Fr. Stan made the train ride to South Carolina to begin the journey of his monastic life. On July 8th 2009, he quietly prayed the Eucharist in his room at Roper Rehabilitation in Charleston, offering thanks to God for his vocation and all that God has given him in his life at Mepkin Abbey. Therefore, it was quite emotional for him to enter the refectory on July 9th–just as the monks finished their midday meal–to the applause of all the brothers and guests welcoming him home after the 24 days which entailed his surgery, recuperation and intensive therapy to get up and walk again. Home brings that added dimension to getting well. Fr. Stan and the community thank everyone who has been praying for him in these days.
