Bishop Emil Wcela, the retired auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre in New York, came to Mepkin on October 12th to offer five days of scripture classes to the men in formation. Bishop Wcela had been professor of scripture at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington, New York, for many years and served as rector of the seminary. As well as work with the men in formation on their study of scripture, Bishop Wcela also spoke with the community in chapter on the matter of the new translation of texts for the liturgy. His work with the NCCB in this area provided him ample information to help enlighten us regarding the developments which are so much on everyone’s mind. He also shared with us his article entitled “What is so Catholic about a Catholic translation of the Bible?” which was published in the April issue of The Catholic Biblical Quarterly.
