On May 22nd, Mepkin welcomed Paul Brennan to join David George in the infirmary and in the lives of the brothers in the Mepkin community. Although Paul spent his childhood in Springfield, MA, he now calls the Lowcountry home. A Certified Nursing Assistant, he shares his knowledge with future nursing assistants in the classes he teaches at Trident Technical College. Through his mutual friendship with Father Kevin and Brother John, Paul became a part of the Mepkin care team. He assists David George in the management of doctor appointments, medications, and all the facets of holistic care that are at the heart of health management at Mepkin Abbey. Part of Paul’s responsibilities include being “the eyes and ears” of the care team. Through getting to know the brothers and forming relationships here in the community, Paul is able to monitor and be aware of health needs the monks may have before they go to the doctor. He then shares this information with David, and together they can address these needs, supporting the monks’ healthy lifestyle.
Although Paul only recently joined the care team this summer, he values his friendships with the monks and the staff, sharing that Mepkin Abbey is “one of the most mutually beneficial places I’ve ever worked.” Paul says he has learned from the brothers, finding inspiration in their strength and perseverance. With a gentle manner and a sincere desire to help others, Paul Brennan is a natural fit and an integral part of life at Mepkin Abbey.
