Joy Never Ending is a day in which the community at Mepkin celebrate the foundation of the monastery in November 1949.This year it was celebrated on November 11.
Before the morning mass, the congregation gathered in the monks’ cemetery and a blessing of each of the monks’ graves was given by Father Joe. It was a way for all present to celebrate the continuity of past and present, and to remember those brothers who lived at Mepkin and are now with the Lord.
During the Eucharist, Dom Elias from Gethsemani Abbey led a short but meaningful ritual in which a prayer was said for Father Stan and one for Father Joe. At the end of Dom Elias’ words, Father Stan placed the cross of St. Benedict around the neck of Father Joe. This symbolized the passing on of the leadership of the community from Father Stan to Father Joe.
