Jason Calhoun, September Monastic Guest
Monastic Guest – Jason Calhoun
September 2019
When reflecting on my time in the Monastic Guest Program, I find myself at a loss for words. The bottom line is this; if you are considering this program, take the plunge. I can confidently say that my time at Mepkin was one of the most wonderfully impactful experiences of my life. The community of love and generosity that is nurtured at Mepkin is an example of what our world needs more of today, and whether or not you are interested in becoming a monk or just trying to grow in your religious or spiritual practice this place will help you grow in ways you cannot anticipate until being there. I found myself looking forward to every part of the day; the monastic life is a life perfectly balanced. Contemplation is found whether you are praying in the church or picking mushrooms or doing dishes. Sitting alongside the monks in silence, whether it be in the church or eating in the refectory, there is nothing but a feeling of gentle humility and love. I was constantly moved and inspired by the simplicity that this community strives for. You will deeply enjoy your time at Mepkin, and you will never forget it.
