New January Refectory Book
The latest book that the monks are reading in the refectory Teilhard de Chardin on the Gospels
By Louis M. Savary and published by Paulist Press. Like St. Paul, Teilhard wrote much about the risen Lord and the mystical body of Christ but very little about the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. Nevertheless, for Teilhard, the Mystical Christ had no meaning if not understood as the One who was born of Mary and who died on the cross. Thus, we can never depart from the Jesus of the Gospels. His book addresses two fundamental questions: “how do Jesus’ words apply to me and to people like me today?” and “How do the Gospels make sense in a world shaped by science and technology and a growing awareness of the universality of evolution?” The author, Louis Savary, holds two doctorates-one in mathematical statistics, and another in theology. He has spent much of his life promoting Teilhard’s ideas for the ordinary person.
As the monks commence reading this book in the refectory, we suggest that you might like to get a copy and join us in reading it.
