Prayer at Mepkin during the Pandemic
As usual, the monks gather in the church seven times a day. We are very much praying now, of course, in the context of a world torn apart by the pandemic. Therefore, we have added three extra items to our normal prayer services.
First, at the suggestion of Father Jonas, we have lit a candle and placed it on the altar outdoors under the bell tower. This candle, which has been made from Easter candles of the past, will remain lighted 24/7. It serves as a reminder to all the Brothers of our need to continue in prayer for those who are sick and for those who have died. We will also be recalling those who are working to alleviate the tragedy. After recent Vespers, the monks processed over, and Father Jonas placed the candle on the altar.
Second, after Midday Prayer each day, the monks say the following prayer. We invite you from home to join us in this prayer:
Most merciful and Triune God
We come to you in our weakness.
We come to you in our fear.
We come to you with trust.
For you alone are our hope.
We place before you the disease present in our world.
We turn to you in in our time of need.
Bring wisdom to the doctors.
Give understanding to the scientists.
Endow caregivers with compassion and generosity.
Bring healing to those who are ill.
Protect those who are most at risk.
Give comfort to those who have lost a loved one.
Welcome those who have died into your eternal home.
Stabilize our communities.
Unite us in your compassion.
Remove all fear from our hearts.
Fill us with confidence in your care.
We pray in the name of Jesus who is Lord forever and ever.
Third, Brother Juan and Father Columba have invited any of the Brothers who are interested to join with them in the recitation of the Rosary each Friday at 4:30 pm. Everyone to join them at the same time any Friday and be united with the monks in prayer.
