Raines Bennett – Monastic Guest

Review Monastic Guest Program – January 2026 by Raines Bennett

I was very blessed to have been accepted into the Monastic Guest Program. All of the Brothers and Fathers were kind, polite and patient throughout my one month stay.

I arrived on Friday January 2nd to warm weather and sunny skies, T-shirt weather. Fast forward to my final day of an impending ice storm and below freezing temps even this close to the southern coast. So, it almost felt like 4 seasons occurred in just 4 weeks. The Abbey and grounds were stunning to witness because of the dramatic weather shift and I embraced it all and thanked God for putting on such a dramatic display of creation. Brother Ambrose sat beside me and would happily answer my questions as well as guide me through the Psalms and Hymns we sang and chanted during the Liturgy of the hours.

I was often reminded of my days in the military, in a regimental way. Order, structure and discipline dwell here. Prayer and work are the foundation. I embraced the silence during my stay. It’s an important component of Monasticism. Between the Liturgy and work there are wonderful vegetarian meals served up by the Great Chef Enzo.

Much thanks to everyone for a very memorable stay.
