Memorial Day Concert at Mepkin
On Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, Mepkin Abbey Church was the venue for a concert which was part of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. The concert was in honor of the maestro Joseph Flummerfelt and the former abbot of Mepkin, the revered Dom Francis Kline. Warm tributes were paid to both men, who made tremendous contributions to music in the Charleston area. The program consisted of Oliver Messiaen’s The Quartet for the End of Time, Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem Op. 9 for choir and organ with cello obligato, Johann Sebastian Bach and Charles Gounod’s Ave Maria and John Rutter’s A Gaelic Blessing. The church was packed for the occasion, and those who attended felt it was a very meaningful and special occasion. The monks have always taken great joy in hosting this annual concert, and the community looks forward to many other concerts in the future.
